Pakistan Confirms Second Poliovirus Case of 2025 in Badin
Pakistan reported its second poliovirus case of 2025, confirmed in the Badin district of Sindh province.
This case follows the first one reported earlier in the year from Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health confirmed the detection of the second wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) on February 12, 2025.
In 2024, a total of 74 poliovirus cases were reported, with 27 from Balochistan, 22 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 23 from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.
Polio is a paralyzing disease with no cure. To ensure strong immunity against this debilitating illness, multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine and completion of the routine vaccination schedule for all children under five are crucial.
According to the Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme, multiple mass vaccination campaigns are conducted annually, delivering the vaccine directly to children at their doorsteps. Additionally, the Expanded Programme on Immunisation offers free vaccinations against 12 childhood diseases at health facilities.
Parents must ensure vaccination for all their children under the age of five to keep them protected.
