25 years since conduct of nuclear tests by Pakistan marking historic day of Youm e Takbeer

Pakistan today on May 28, marks the Silver Jubilee of Youm-e-Takbeer!

The country conducted successful nuclear tests in Chagai 25 years ago and became the seventh nuclear-armed country in the world and the first in the Islamic world, reinforcing its writ in the region and restoring the balance of power.

On 28th May 1998 at 3:16 PM local time, Pakistan restored the balance of power in the region by successfully establishing a credible minimum Nuclear deterrence.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in his message on the occasion, reaffirmed that the national defence and sovereignty were impregnable.

The PM said that Youm-e-Takbeer was a clear declaration of “no compromise over the country’s sovereignty, and defence”, and a reminder that the nation would not budge from any sacrifice to safeguard.

He added that the national defence, dignity and freedom are above everything to the nation and no one has the courage to take them away.

He also urged the nation to move ahead with the same spirit as manifested in Youm-e-Takbeer to attain economic sovereignty and self-dependence.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also paid tribute to the patriotism of the then prime minister, Nawaz Sharif — for conducting the nuclear tests despite all external pressures — and ex-premier Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto — who is the founder of Pakistan’s nuclear programme.

He also lauded the services of Pakistan and Dr Abdul Qadir Khan and all scientists, engineers and individuals who contributed to achieving nuclear deterrence.

The premier also expressed his gratitude to Saudi Arabia and other brotherly countries that had helped Pakistan amid the economic sanctions imposed due to the atomic programme.

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) director general Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry in a message marking the day, paid tribute to contributors to Pakistan’s milestone nuclear programme.

“Today, the complete Pakistani nation celebrates the Silver Jubilee of Youm-e-Takbeer and commemorates the remarkable achievement of establishing Credible Minimum Deterrence. This achievement has reshaped the power dynamics in our region,” DG ISPR said.

“Armed Forces pay rich tribute to the brilliant minds who conceived and achieved this accomplishment under daunting challenges. We salute the scientists and engineers who turned the impossible into a reality. Long Live Pakistan,” DG ISPR added.
