Pakistan receives $1.02 billion second IMF tranche under EFF

According to State Bank, the amount will be reflected in foreign exchange reserves for the week ending May 16.

Pakistan has received the second tranche of approximately $1.02 billion (SDR 760 million) from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program. This amount will be reflected in the State Bank of Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves for the week ending May 16, 2025.

This disbursement follows the IMF Executive Board’s approval of the first review of Pakistan’s economic reform program under the EFF on May 9, 2025, which allowed Pakistan to draw this tranche. The total disbursements under the EFF arrangement now stand at about $2.1 billion (SDR 1.52 billion).

In addition to the EFF tranche, the IMF Executive Board also approved a new arrangement under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), granting Pakistan access to around $1.4 billion to help strengthen economic resilience to climate vulnerabilities and natural disasters.

The IMF program, totalling about $7 billion under the EFF agreed in July 2024 and approved in September 2024, is considered crucial for Pakistan’s economic reforms and for bolstering its foreign exchange reserves, providing a cushion against fiscal pressures and supporting economic stability.
