Pervez Musharraf passes away in Dubai

Former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, had been living in Dubai since 2016

Pervez Musharraf passed away in Dubai on Sunday, aged 79.

Former President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf (Retd) passes away after a prolonged illness, at a hospital in Dubai.

It was reported that the former president was undergoing treatment for amyloidosis at American Hospital Dubai.

He had been living in Dubai since 2016.

Musharraf’s family has filed an application in the Pakistani consulate in Dubai to shift the former military leader’s body to Pakistan.

According to the sources, the plane from Pakistan will reach Dubai tomorrow morning to take the dead body of Pervez Musharraf.

Sources say that the special plane will reach Dubai’s Al Maktoum Airport from Noor Khan Airbase.

Pervez Musharraf,  a retired four-star general became the tenth president of Pakistan after the successful military takeover of the federal government in 1999.

He held the presidency from 2001 until 2008 when he tendered his resignation to avoid impeachment.

Pervez Musharraf, who introduced the slogan “Pakistan first”, had always been in the headlines in his tumultuous life, from the Kargil war to the overthrow of the Nawaz government and from making himself a President in uniform to leaving the country.

He was born on August 11, 1943, in Delhi, British India.

Pervez Musharraf got his commission from the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul on April 19, 1961.

Upon getting his commission, he joined the special services group.

The military ruler also took part in the 1965 and 1971 wars. 

He was promoted to the rank of general in 1998 and took over as the chief of army staff (COAS) a post he held till 2007.

A year later on October 12, 1999, Gen (retd) Musharraf usurped power in a coup d’etat.

Pervez Musharraf became the Chief Executive after ending Nawaz Sharif’s government on 12 October 1999. Pervez Musharraf is also known as the main character of the Kargil operation.

He also accepted the US offer to become a front-line ally in the Afghan war against al-Qaeda after the 9/11 attacks.

In April 2002, he was elected as the regular President of Pakistan by holding a referendum.

In 2004, with the support of the Muslim League-Q, the Assembly made the 17th amendment to the constitution and elected Bardi as president for another five years.

Pervez Musharraf is also known for the anti-constitutional measures he took to depose the judges of the Supreme Court in November 2007, which marked the beginning of the Lawyers’ Movement, also known as the Movement for the Restoration of the Judiciary.

Following a movement led by the political parties, Musharraf resigned as the president on August 18, 2008.

A case of high treason was filed against him during Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) tenure.

The former military ruler was sentenced to death by a special court on December 17, 2019, under Article 6 of the Constitution.

Pervez Musharraf was present in the court on March 31, 2016, when he was indicted on the charges.
