Peshawar Suicide Blast: Death toll rises to 28, more than 150 injured; Medical emergency declared in the city

Casualties feared to rise

At least 28 people, including policemen, were martyred while 65 others were injured in a suicide blast that was carried out in a mosque in Peshawar Police Lines on Monday.

As reported, the explosion took place at around 1:40 pm local time as Zuhr prayers were being offered at the mosque after which the roof of the building also collapsed.

According to security officials, the terrorist was standing in the first row while the people in the first and second rows were affected mostly.

The blast took place at the mosque where a large number of people had gathered for prayer, police official Sikandar Khan said.

“A portion of the building had collapsed and several people are believed to be under it,” Khan added.

A rescue operation is currently underway at the location with heavy machinery to search for any survivors under the debris.

While the injured have been shifted to Lady Reading Hospital where many are reported to be in critical condition.

The provincial health department has declared a “medical emergency” in the city in the wake of the Police Lines Peshawar bomb blast.

“All the doctors and support staff in the government health facilities including MTIs in district Peshawar are directed to remain on red alert to cope with the emergencies, till further orders,” the notification issued in this regards stated.
