PIA country manager arrested in Bahrain on charges of embezzlement

The Pakistani embassy in Bahrain has termed the incident a “misunderstanding.”

The PIA country manager is reported to have been arrested in Bahrain.

As reported, the authorities in Bahrain have arrested the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) country manager on charges of embezzlement.

The PIA country manager Awais Hanif is accused of taking passengers’ luggage to his office.

Reacting to the development, a PIA spokesperson clarified that the airline does not have an office at the Bahrain airport. According to the spokesperson, any unclaimed luggage is transferred to the airline’s central office, from where it is delivered to the passengers.

“The lost bags are later delivered to the owners,” the PIA spokesman added.

The PIA spokesperson clarified that there was no criminal intent involved, and the issue simply occurred due to the absence of an office at the airport.

The country manager’s actions do not constitute a criminal offence and the airline has engaged senior officials to defend the case, the PIA spokesperson said, adding that updates on the case would be provided timely.

On the other hand, the Pakistani embassy in Bahrain has termed the incident a “misunderstanding.”

The embassy said that the central office was in contact with the passengers to ensure their belongings were returned to them.
