PMDC Extends BDS Program to Five Years to Enhance Dental Education Standards

The University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Lahore has already adopted this new curriculum

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has officially announced the extension of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program from four years to five years, effective from the 2024-25 academic session.

This change aims to align Pakistan’s dental education with international standards, where BDS programs typically span five years.

Key details of the new structure include:

  • Fifth-Year Focus: The additional year will emphasize clerkship, providing students with practical experience in a clinical setting.
  • Mandatory House Job: Following the completion of the five-year program, graduates will be required to undertake a mandatory one-year house job, further enhancing their training and readiness for professional practice.

The University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Lahore has already adopted this new curriculum, and it is now mandated for all dental universities across Pakistan to implement these changes.

This initiative reflects a commitment to improving the quality of dental education and ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet global healthcare standards.
