President Zardari Extends Condolences to Prince Rahim, Pays Tribute to Aga Khan IV’s Legacy

The Aga Khan IV passed away on February 4, surrounded by family in Lisbon, Portugal. He was 88.

President Asif Ali Zardari arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, on Monday to pay tribute and offer condolences on the passing of Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili community.

President Zardari met with Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V, who has succeeded his father as the 50th hereditary Imam of the Ismaili community.

 

During the meeting, President Zardari shared that he was on an official visit to China when he received the news of Aga Khan’s passing.

He stated that his visit to Lisbon was to honour the late Prince Karim Aga Khan’s lifelong commitment to philanthropy and humanitarian efforts, emphasizing that his contributions to humanity would always be remembered.

In a statement, the president noted that the news of the Aga Khan’s passing has “deeply saddened the nation.”

He highlighted the late philanthropist’s contributions to Pakistan’s social and economic development, praising his “visionary leadership” that improved the lives of people in Pakistan and other regions of the world.

He also expressed hope that Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini would carry forward his father’s mission in service of humanity.

The late Aga Khan IV was renowned for his contributions to global development through initiatives like the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), which has significantly impacted socio-economic development in regions such as Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral in Pakistan.

A private funeral service for Prince Karim Aga Khan IV was held at an Ismaili community centre in Lisbon before he was laid to rest at a private ceremony in Aswan, Egypt. The funeral service was attended by several dignitaries including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Spain’s King Emeritus Juan Carlos.
