Pro-Khalistan Sikh activists took down the Indian flag at the country’s High Commission in London, it emerges on Sunday.
The move comes in a show of support for more than 11,000 Sikhs, some 8,000 miles away, taking part in the second phase of Khalistan Referendum voting in the Australian city of Brisbane.
The video of the incident is now doing rounds on social media. It shows a group of Sikh youth gathering outside the Indian High Commission in Central London raising Sikh religious slogans and calling for the creation of Khalistan.
One of the turban-clad men starts climbing the Indian High Commission building from the front and makes it to the top balcony where the Indian flag is hoisted. Within 30 seconds, the man takes off the Indian Tiranga and tried to replace it with the Khalistan flag.
The supporters on the ground take off the Indian flag completely as the Khalistan flag was being raised and meanwhile, Indian high commission staff appeared on the balcony from inside and rescued the Indian flag.
As reported, the senior-most UK diplomat in New Delhi was summoned late evening today to convey India’s strong protest at the actions taken by separatist and extremist elements against the Indian High Commission in London earlier in the day.
