Putin Announces Unilateral Three-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine to Commemorate World War II Victory

As the conflict enters its fourth year, this latest ceasefire declaration underscores the ongoing deadlock and deep mistrust between the two sides

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a unilateral three-day ceasefire in Ukraine, set to begin at midnight on May 8 and last until midnight on May 11, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II.

The Kremlin described the pause in hostilities as a humanitarian gesture and called on Ukraine to reciprocate by halting its military operations during this period.

However, Russia warned that any violations by Ukrainian forces would be met with an “adequate and effective” military response.

This announcement follows a recent, shorter ceasefire declared by Putin over the Easter period, which was marred by mutual accusations of breaches.

Ukraine has yet to respond to the latest truce proposal, maintaining scepticism about Russia’s intentions. Ukrainian officials have reiterated their call for a full and unconditional ceasefire, highlighting that any limited pauses timed to Russian holidays are insufficient.

The ceasefire comes amid intensified international efforts, particularly from the United States, to broker a lasting peace deal in the conflict that began in February 2022.

While Russia has expressed willingness to negotiate, it insists that Ukraine must recognize Moscow’s control over Crimea and other annexed regions as preconditions. Ukraine and its Western allies reject these demands, viewing them as illegitimate and a barrier to peace.

As the conflict enters its fourth year, this latest ceasefire declaration underscores the ongoing deadlock and deep mistrust between the two sides, with the symbolic timing linked to Russia’s World War II commemorations.

The international community continues to watch closely, hoping for a breakthrough that has so far remained elusive.
