Heavy rains in the Saudi coastal city of Jeddah on Thursday have brought the city to a hold.
Winter rainstorms and flooding occur almost every year in Jeddah, a city of roughly four million people positioned on the Red Sea, often referred to as the “gateway to Mecca”.
Rain, thunder, and lightning storms in Jeddah brought the life to standstill on Thursday, washing-out roads. This lead to the closer of the road leading to Mecca as well, Islam’s holiest city.
The city’s King Abdulaziz International Airport in a statement said that “due to weather conditions, the departure of some flights has been delayed” and urged passengers to contact carriers for up-to-date schedules.
Meanwhile the schools of the city were closed amid safety of the students amid heavy rain fall that led to urban flooding.
The Saudi Press Agency reported that all schools, public, private and international, in Jeddah, Rabigh, and Khulais are closed today.
