Amid the ongoing Indian brutality in occupied Kashmir, the plight of Bengali citizens in Assam and continued violence against religious and ethnic minorities (Muslims, Dalits, Christians) in India, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has decided to award Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi an award. This decision has not gone down well with three Nobel laureates who have voiced their reservations over Modi’s barbarism in a letter to the foundation.
Addressing the Foundation head Mairead Maguire, Nobel laureates Tawakkol Abdel-Salam Karman, and Shirin Ebadi have stated that giving an award to Modi is a clear contradiction of Bill and Melinda’s philosophy of equity, justice, and human rights.
“Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India has descended into dangerous and deadly chaos that has consistently undermined human rights, democracy,” said the letter.
“This is particularly troubling to us as the stated mission of your foundation is to preserve life and fight inequity,” it added.
The laureates further wrote, “In Assam, 1.9 million Indians have been stripped of citizenship; in Kashmir, since August, 800,000 Indian armed forces have kept eight million Kashmiris without phone or internet service for the last month.”
The Nobel prize winners also reiterated that Modi has clearly been involved in the 2002 massacre against Muslims in Gujrat, India.
“As a result, Modi was banned from entering the United States, the UK, and Canada for 10 years until he acquired diplomatic immunity by becoming India’s Prime Minister,” the letter added.
The Nobel laureates demanded Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to retract Modi’s award and avoid a practice that is potentially glorifying a barbaric and violent individual like Modi.
