Rights activist Sarim Burney arrested in Karachi on ‘human trafficking charges’

Burney was arrested by Anti-Human Trafficking cell of the FIA.

Rights activist Sarim Burney was arrested in Karachi on ‘human trafficking charges’ on Wednesday.

According to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Burney was taken into custody after he landed in Karachi from the United States.

The arrest has been made on the complaint of the US officials.

Berney is accused of trafficking more than 25 children to the US and illegally getting the children adopted in the country, according to the sources within FIA.

The FIA sources said that the allegations of smuggling 17 children to the US have come to light, adding that an investigation into the matter has been initiated. 

Burney operates a Sarim Burney Welfare Trust International set up in Karachi, Pakistan.

“Sarim Burney Welfare Trust International, is a non-profit trust “representing the oppressed and less privileged population”, as per the organisation’s website.

The trust has been working to procure social justice, for which the organisation has established a legal aid committee comprising professional local and foreign lawyers, according to its website.
