Rishi Sunak becomes Britain’s first prime minister of color

Rishi Sunak became Britain’s first prime minister of color on Tuesday.

Sunak, 42, officially became the British prime minister on Tuesday after meeting with King Charles at Buckingham Palace.

He is UK’s fifth prime minister in six years, the third in less than two months.

Sunak, 42, is also Britain’s youngest prime minister for more than 200 years.

Sunak, a Hindu, also becomes Britain’s first prime minister of Indian origin.

Rishi Sunak‘s grandparents hailed from Gujranwala, now in Pakistan; while Rishi Sunak‘s parents were from Nairobi, Kenya; and Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton, UK.

 

A day earlier, Former finance minister Rishi Sunak completed a political comeback, he was selected prime minister by Britain’s ruling Conservative Party, just seven weeks after he was beaten to the office by Liz Truss.

 

Britain’s new prime minister, on his first day in office, vowed to fix the mess left by his predecessor, restore faith in politics and tackle a “profound economic crisis” but warned the country there would be difficult decisions.

Standing in front of his new Downing Street office, Sunak said: “I want to pay tribute to my predecessor Liz Truss … But some mistakes were made. Not born of ill will or bad intentions. Quite the opposite, in fact. But mistakes nonetheless.”

“And I have been elected as leader of my party and your prime minister, in part to fix them. And that work begins immediately. I will place economic stability and confidence at the heart of this government’s agenda. This will mean difficult decisions to come,” he added.

As reported, Sunak is one of the richest men in the British parliament.

He will have to find deep spending cuts to plug an estimated 40 billion pound ($45 billion) hole in the public finances due to an economic slowdown, higher borrowing costs, and a six-month programme of support for people’s energy bills.
