Sammi Deen Baloch, BYC Leader, Released from Karachi Prison

Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leader Sammi Deen Baloch was released from Karachi Central Prison on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, after a week in custody under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance.
The Sindh government on Tuesday removed the name of Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leader Sammi Deen Baloch from an earlier detention order under section 3 of the Sindh Maintenance of Public Order (3 MPO) with ‘immediate effect’.
The order today by the Sindh Home Department further stated that jail authorities are instructed to release Sammi if “she is not required in any other case or otherwise”.
Her detention followed her participation in protests against rights violations in Balochistan, where she and five others were initially arrested on March 24 for violating Section 144.
Despite a judicial magistrate ordering her release the next day, Sammi was rearrested under the MPO for 30 days, citing security concerns.
The Sindh Home Department issued an order withdrawing her name from the MPO detention, leading to her release.
Her lawyer, Jibran Nasir, confirmed that Sammi is now with her family and emphasized that public and media pressure played a crucial role in securing her freedom.
The BYC and civil society members celebrated her release as a victory for the movement, while continuing to demand the release of other detained activists, including Dr. Mahrang Baloch.
