Sarim Burney’s bail plea rejected in the human trafficking case

On June 6, a local court granted a two-day physical remand of Sarim Burney to the FIA

Sarim Burney’s bail plea was rejected in the human trafficking case on Tuesday.

The development comes as the Karachi City Court denied the bail application of activist Sarim Burney, who is accused of illegally sending children abroad and engaging in child trafficking.

Judicial Magistrate East announced its decision on Burney’s bail application after hearing the arguments from both sides.

During the case hearing, the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) counsel told the court that more evidence is required to be collected against the suspect.

“If the suspect is granted bail, it may affect the investigation,” the FIA counsel said, adding that the accused is resorting to continuous lies.

He added that further revelations have been made during the investigation.

He also stated that the accused had been lying continuously and that further revelations came to light during the investigation.

According to him, a victim baby girl Haya’s mother stated that when she contacted Sarim Burney to get her daughter back, he refused to hand over the child.

The prosecutor argued that granting bail to the accused would influence the investigation.

On the other hand, Sarim Burney’s lawyer argued that the FIA did not conduct a proper inquiry into the matter.

“The parents who adopted the baby from the hospital handed her over to the Sarim Burney Trust,” he said during the arguments.

The social worker’s counsel added that all legal requirements are met in the process of children’s adoption.

“FIA made allegations, but could not provide evidence,” the lawyer said.

On June 6, a local court granted a two-day physical remand of Sarim Burney to the Federal Investigations Agency (FIA).

However, an extension of the physical remand was denied with the FIA being given custody of the accused for only two days.

The social worker, who runs the Sarim Burney Welfare Trust International, a non-profitable entity, was arrested by FIA on June 5 after he landed at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi following his US visit.

His arrest and subsequent remand by the FIA came in the wake of charges against him which include human trafficking, smuggling and illegally sending children to the US after American authorities filed a complaint against him.
