Saudi-led coalition forces have responded to the United Nations appeal for a ceasefire in war-torn regions as they began a two-week ceasefire against Huthi rebels in Yemen. The appeal was made by UN secretary-general António Guterres in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic that has gripped the entire world.
“The coalition announces a comprehensive ceasefire in Yemen for a period of two weeks, starting on Thursday,” announced Turki al-Maliki, the military alliance’s spokesman.
“The coalition is determined to support efforts towards combatting the spread of COVID-19 pandemic,” he stated.
Maliki added that the ceasefire may be extended depending on need and the two-week period is aimed at creating suitable conditions for a UN mediated meeting between the two parties at conflict. The ultimate goal of the truce, however, is to find a permanent ceasefire solution in the country.
Earlier last week UN secretary-general had urged the warring parties in the world to implement a ceasefire to provide necessary aid for civilians who are endangered by COVID-19 spread. As a result, 11 parties had agreed to put an end to war for the time being.
