Supreme Court Holds Full Court Reference to Bid Farewell to Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa

Senior puisne judge Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, who would have assumed the role of Chief Justice if not for the 26th Amendment, could not attend the gathering

The Supreme Court of Pakistan held a full court reference on October 25, 2024, to bid farewell to outgoing Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa.

Judges, lawyers, and members of Justice Isa’s family, including his wife, Sarina Isa, attended the event.

As reported, a total of 16 judges, including two ad-hoc and two of the Shariat Appellate Bench, attended the event. Among the 16 judges were Justices Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, and Shahid Waheed.

The ceremony was live-streamed on the Supreme Court’s website and YouTube channel, reflecting its significance in the legal community.

During the reference, various speakers highlighted Justice Isa’s contributions during his brief tenure as the 29th Chief Justice, which began on September 17, 2023. Attorney-General Mansoor Usman Awan and leaders from the Pakistan Bar Council and Supreme Court Bar Association expressed their gratitude for his service.

Justice Isa himself reflected on his career, thanking colleagues and emphasizing the critical role of judges in discerning truth from falsehood.

Notably absent from the gathering was Justice Mansoor Ali Shah.

Senior puisne judge Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, who would have assumed the role of Chief Justice if not for the 26th Amendment, could not attend the gathering as he was performing Umrah with his family.

Justices Ayesha Malik, Athar Minallah, Munib Akhtar and Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan were also not present at the occasion.

.Justice Yahya Afridi is set to succeed Justice Isa as Chief Justice, with his oath-taking ceremony scheduled for the following day.
