Sheikh Rashid arrested for levelling allegations against Zardari

However, the former interior minister and his nephew, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, contradicted the police's statement.

Sheikh Rashid has been arrested for levelling allegations against Zardari!

According to police, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed was arrested from Murree Motorway in the early hours of Thursday.

As reported, Sheikh Rashid was taken into custody in connection with remarks he allegedly made against former president Asif Ali Zardari, accusing him of hatching a “murder plot to eliminate PTI chief Imran Khan”.

However, the former interior minister and his nephew, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, contradicted the police’s statement.

He said that the authorities took Sheikh Rashid in custody from his house in Rawalpindi and not the motorway.

The development comes after Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Rawalpindi Division President Raja Inayat Ur Rehman had filed a case against Sheikh Rashid in Islamabad’s Aabpara Police Station for alleging that former president Asif Ali Zardari was hatching a plot to assassinate the PTI chief.

Three sections — 120B (criminal conspiracy), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) — have been added to the FIR.

The PPP divisional president in the filed FIR stated that the AML chief tried to badmouth a former president and cause a “permanent danger” to the PPP co-chairman and his family.

“He wants to create conflict and enmity between two groups – PPP and PTI – with this fabricated and baseless conspiracy so that the peace of the country can be disturbed,” it added.

On the other hand, in remarks quoted by BBC Urdu, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed claimed that around 300 to 400 policemen barged into his house, thrashed staffers, and forcibly took him away.

Sheikh Rashid alleged that some [personnel] used ladders to enter his house. He went on to say that he had been arrested despite getting relief from the Islamabad High Court.

Sheikh Rashid vowed to challenge his arrest in court.

Several hours before, he posted a photograph on Twitter of him apparently taken at the Aabpara Police Station.
