Sheikh Saleh Al-Shaiba, the chief Key Holder of the Kaaba passes away

Following Sheikh Saleh Al-Shaiba's demise, the long-standing custom will remain and the next person to guard the Kaaba will also be from the Al-Shaiba family.

Sheikh Saleh Al-Shaiba, the chief Key Holder of the Kaaba passed away on Saturday.

His funeral prayer was held at Masjid Al Haram, following which he was laid to rest in Al Mualla Cemetery.

Sheikh Saleh Al-Shaiba was the 109th successor of Uthman ibn Talha (RA) as the guardian of Kaaba, who was given the responsibility by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) after the conquest of Makkah.

The Prophet (PBUH) said that the Al Shaiba family should keep this important role, and they’ve been doing it ever since.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) handed the keys to Bani Shaiba in the year of the conquest of Mecca, and said, “Take it, O Bani Talha, eternally up to the Day of Resurrection, and it will not be taken from you unless by an unjust, oppressive tyrant”.

A free-standing arch stood where the houses of Banu Shaybah were located near the Kabah until it was removed in 1950 to expand the Mataf area.

Following Sheikh Saleh Al-Shaiba’s demise, the long-standing custom will remain and the next person to guard the Kaaba will also be from the Al-Shaiba family.

The Bani Shaiba are an Arab clan from the Banu Abd al-Dar sub-clan, which is part of the larger Quraysh tribal confederation in Hejaz, present-day Saudi Arabia. They primarily consist of the descendants of Uthman ibn Talha, his father Talha ibn Abdullah, and his grandfather Abd al-Dar ibn Qusai.

Historically, they have held the keys to the Kaaba since pre-Islamic times (1500 BC) and continued to do so after the Conquest of Mecca by the Prophet Muhammad in 630.
