Sindh govt. announces public holiday on Sept 22 on account of Urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai

The Sindh government on Wednesday has announced a public holiday on September 22, 14 Safar (Wednesday) to mark the Urs of saint Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.

As per the notification issued by the Sindh government, all offices, educational institutions, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils falling under the Sindh government, except essential services, will remain closed on September 22.

Shah Abdul Latif (1689 – 1752) was a Sindhi Sufi scholar, mystic, saint, poet, and musician. Known as the poet of Sindh, Shah Latif died on January 1st, 1752, which was 14 Safar 1165 in the Islamic calendar.

Each year, a public holiday is observed on 14 Safar in Sindh to mark his Urs, an annual commemoration of his death.

Last year the urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Instead, a short ceremony of the Shah Latif Award 2020 was held in Bhitshah.
