Sindh Health Minister Dismisses COVID-19 Outbreak Rumors in Karachi

She noted that COVID-19 is now being treated globally in the same way as influenza, describing it as a seasonal flu and urging people not to overreact.

The Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho, officially denied reports of a COVID-19 outbreak in Karachi, labelling such claims as false.

In a statement on Monday, Dr  Azra Pechuho emphasized that the situation regarding COVID-19 is under control and asserted that the virus is now being treated similarly to influenza globally.

She stated that out of more than 100 COVID-19 tests conducted in the city, only seven returned positive results, dismissing reports of a significant outbreak as inaccurate.

The Minister highlighted that those who tested positive showed only mild, flu-like symptoms and were sent home.

She added that influenza A (H1N1) has been confirmed in 10-12% of patients, while RSV and other respiratory viruses have been detected in 5-10% of children.

Dr. Pechuho also emphasized that many patients remain untested, contributing to the underreporting of illnesses.

She noted that COVID-19 is now being treated globally in the same way as influenza, describing it as a seasonal flu and urging people not to overreact.

Pechuho’s remarks come amid concerns about respiratory illnesses, which often share symptoms with COVID-19, influenza, and seasonal flu. This overlap may have contributed to public confusion regarding the current health status.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) also supported this stance by reassuring the public that there has not been a significant increase in COVID-19 cases across Pakistan and that the health authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

In light of these developments, health officials are urging the public to remain vigilant but not alarmed, as they continue to implement standard health guidelines to mitigate any potential spread of respiratory infections during this seasonal shift.
