Sukkur Mayor Claims 77-Year Rainfall Record Shattered with 290mm in Just One Day
Rainwater had flooded Old Sukkur, Ghanta Ghar, and other areas of the city

This monsoon season, Sukkur city in Sindh has experienced catastrophic rainfall, shattering a 77-year record with 290mm of rain in just one day.
Several areas, including Ghanta Ghar, nearby neighbourhoods, and low-lying areas like Old Sukkur and Jail Road, are submerged under several feet of water in Sukkur, the third largest city of Province Sindh.
The flash flooding has also affected major roads like Nishtar Road, Husaini Road, Ghanta Ghar, Barrage Road, and Regent, with water entering most markets, forcing shopkeepers to close down their businesses.
In the current spell, Sukkur recorded 290mm of rainfall in just a single day, while in 2022, 374mm of rain had been recorded in 12 days, an official statement issued by the provincial authorities claimed on Sunday.
Following the devastating rain, the Sindh government spokesperson and Sukkur Mayor, Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh, said that the dewatering has been completed in 80% of the city.
He also assured that work continues in the remaining areas and that normalcy should return to the city within a few hours.
Sheikh also noted that the Sukkur Municipal Corporation had proactively prepared for rainwater management by upgrading disposal stations, installing heavy generators, and deploying relevant machinery in 57 low-lying areas.
He added that while rainwater had flooded Old Sukkur, Ghanta Ghar, and other areas, prompt action had managed to control the situation effectively.

On the other hand, Sardar Sarfaraz, chief meteorologist at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), rejected the claim regarding the record-breaking rainfall in Sukkur, terming it “wrong”.
“116mm of rain was recorded in Sukkur in 48 hours. Rohri near Sukkur recorded 134mm rainfall,” he said on Monday while talking to Geo News.
