Tax Raid Turns Hostage Crisis: FBR Officials Held at Karachi Wedding Hall

A tax raid by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in Karachi escalated into a hostage situation when staff at a wedding hall on Dalmia Road detained FBR officials, it emerged on Thursday.
As reported, the raid was initiated due to suspicions that the wedding hall was under-reporting its earnings.
Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Hamza confirmed that the FBR team was investigating these discrepancies when they were held captive by the venue’s employees.
The situation lasted several hours, during which negotiations took place to secure the release of the FBR officials. Ultimately, they were freed without any reported injuries.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between tax authorities and businesses regarding compliance with income reporting regulations.
On the other hand, speaking to Geo News after the incident, Assistant Commissioner Hamza referred to the incident as a “departmental misunderstanding” and confirmed that the hall staff had been called to the FBR office the next day for further discussions.
