Teachers announce boycott of online classes, exams in University of Peshawar

University of Peshawar (UoP) teaching staff on Sunday has announced complete boycott of all the academic activities including online classes and examinations from today to an unspecified period to pressure the government to lift ban on appointment and recruitment in the varsity.

The executive body of Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) with its president Prof Dr Fazle Nasir, took the decision in an online meeting which was announced to the media.

The meeting rejected the ban on new recruitments, contract renewal and promotions in the university, which according to the teachers’ representatives have been adversely affecting the career of the teaching community as well as other staff of the university.

It was decided in the meeting that a sit-in protest  would be staged outside the PUTA Hall for two hours daily till the government would accept their demands.

“Various teaching and administrative positions had been advertised in the UoP in 2018, but due to the unjustifiable ban imposed by the chancellor on recruitments, no progress regarding promotions and renewal of contracts could be made in the process,” said Dr Fazle Nasir .

While expressing his concern over the government’s policies about universities, he said that financial limitations  was one of the chief issue faced by the universities these days as most of the institutions were unable to function  due to lack of funds, he added.

“The government’s cut on education budget has worsened the severity of the situation,” he went on to add.

The president of PUTA demanded the government to immediately lift the ban and ensure smooth functioning of the University.
