Trump Receives Backlash for Blaming Video Games for Gun Violence in US

Donald Trump – often known for his unpopular and unfathomable remarks – has come under fire for his recent condescending remarks about gun violence and its relation with video games after the shooting massacre in El Paso, Taxes and Dayton, Ohio.

“There’s a need for greater measures to identify people with mental illness and limit their access to weapons […] There’s also need to curb gruesome and grisly video games that contribute to a culture of violence,” said Trump as he condemned the attack, the white supremacy and internet’s role in inciting gun violence in US.

Ironically, Trump forgot to mention the need to reform gun control laws and suspension of arms supply to civilians without due diligence.

However advocacy groups that have been lobbying for gun reforms in the US did not forget to remind Trump of the crux of the problem, his country is facing.

“People suffer from mental illness in every other country on earth; people play video games in virtually every other country on earth. The difference is the guns,” said Hillary Clinton on Twitter.

“Generally, if you are talking about video games, there is literally not one piece of data that says that they are a factor,” said Mathew Littman, the president of 97% Gun Reform, a group that advocates and researches for gun control laws.

Littman also reminded Trump of Japan where statistically speaking gaming is massively popular yet gun violence remains a close to zero occurrence.

Alongside notable personalities coming out to criticize Trump, the POTUS was also slammed on Twitter as gamers and gaming industry to the president to task.

“We keep having this argument over and over, and all the evidence points to the contrary. Video games have helped me through the darkest points of my life and offered me an outlet when I had nothing else. Video games do not cause violence,” said a Twitter user with the widely popular hashtag #VideogamesAreNotToBlame.

While one Twitter user went as far as calling Trump stupid for blaming video games for the shooting incidents in US.

“Mr. Trump: It’s not mental illness. It’s not video games. It’s the guns, stupid,” wrote the user.

Another user wrote, “Wait…that’s it??? Violent video games and mental health? Not the high powered weapons of war being sold to civilians by the millions that are actually being USED to carry out these acts of domestic terror??”
