Twitter threatened with a possible shutdown in Pakistan for not removing objectionable content

According to the media reports Twitter faces danger of being banned in Pakistan because of the government’s inability to force the tech giant to bend to its requirements regarding what is suitable for public consumption or falls within the constitutional domain of legitimate free speech.

As the Micro-blogging platform, Twitter has been asked by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to fulfill its requests to block objectionable content or face a possible shutdown in the country.

It occurred on Wednesday 15th Aug, that, PTA has informed the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat regarding the issue that while Facebook, YouTube and other social media platforms complied with requests from the government to block objectionable content, but Twitter did not do so.

Nisar Ahmed, director general of the authority’s internet policy and web analysis, told the committee that Twitter had not responded to its notices. The authority has been reported to praise Facebook, YouTube and other social media platforms that had complied with the government’s orders.

As it has occurred in past that the Facebook was banned in Pakistan by the authorities for 2 weeks in 2010 for not removing blasphemous content and similar happened with YouTube, it was blocked nationwide from 2012 to 2016. This news deeply concerns the circle of people who are highly active on Twitter in Pakistan,
