US Launches Largest Mass Deportation in History

538 arrests, 373 detainers lodged

U.S. authorities have arrested 538 migrants and deported hundreds in a large-scale operation just days into President Donald Trump’s second term, as of Thursday.

Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on social media platform X that “the Trump Administration arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals” and noted that “hundreds” were deported using military aircraft.

She further emphasized, “The largest mass deportation operation in history is well underway. Promises made. Promises kept.”

On Thursday, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted a raid at a local establishment, detaining both undocumented residents and U.S. citizens without presenting a warrant.

The mayor revealed that among those detained was a U.S. military veteran, describing the incident as “an egregious act” that blatantly violates the U.S. Constitution.

The US has initiated a mass deportation operation, which is being described as the largest such effort in history, targeting 11M undocumented migrants nationwide. This operation aligns with former President Donald Trump’s campaign promise to conduct widespread deportations if re-elected, targeting millions of undocumented immigrants across the nation.

President Trump has reiterated his commitment to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, claiming he would act on his first day back in office. His plans include mobilizing local law enforcement and the National Guard, suggesting the construction of detention camps and utilizing military resources to support these efforts.

Trump’s strategy involves a combination of federal, state, and local resources. However, experts highlight significant legal and logistical challenges that could hinder such a large-scale operation. The estimated costs of deporting millions could reach hundreds of billions of dollars, potentially impacting the US economy negatively.

This mass deportation initiative raises concerns about social disruption and the potential for increased tensions within communities that host undocumented immigrants. Rights advocates are mobilizing against these plans, emphasizing the human cost involved, particularly for families with mixed immigration statuses.
