WHO announces to end the global emergency imposed for Covid-19 epidemic after 3 years

The World Health Organisation (WHO) announces to end the global emergency imposed for the Covid-19 epidemic after 3 years!

It is “with great hope that I declare Covid-19 over as a global health emergency”, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters on Friday.

He added the end of the emergency did not mean Covid was over as a global health threat.

“The worst thing any country could do now is to use this news as a reason to let down its guard, to dismantle the systems it has built, or to send the message to its people that Covid-19 is nothing to worry about,” he said.

According to an estimate the pandemic had killed “at least 20 million” people – nearly three times the under seven million deaths officially recorded.

The decision was made at the WHO’s Emergency Committee meeting on Thursday.

The committee recommended the UN agency declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern, which has been in place for over three years.

The UN health agency first declared public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) over the crisis on January 30, 2020.
