Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange has been arrested in London from the Ecuadorian embassy in London after living there in the asylum for seven years after Ecuador withdrew his asylum.
Ecuador’s president Lenin Moreno said that it withdrew Mr. Assange’s asylum after his repeated violations of international conventions. WikiLeaks founder Assange will not be extradited to a country with the death penalty.
Assange has been living at the embassy in London’s plush Knightsbridge district since 2012 when he sought refuge there after being accused of sexual assault in Sweden, allegations which have been since dropped.
British Home Secretary Sajid Javid in a tweet about the development said, ” Nearly 7yrs after entering the Ecuadorean Embassy, I can confirm Julian Assange is now in police custody and rightly facing justice in the UK. I would like to thank Ecuador for its cooperation & @metpoliceuk for its professionalism. No one is above the law”.
However, Wikileaks has tweeted that Ecuador had acted illegally in terminating Mr. Assange’s political asylum “in violation of international law”. Julian Assange did not “walk out of the embassy”. The Ecuadorian ambassador invited British police into the embassy and he was immediately arrested.
