Losing three toes in an accident when he was younger was not enough to keep this naturally talented batsman down. Martin Guptill was part of the New Zealand ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup team in 2008 and made his one-day international debut for the Black Caps in early 2009 against the West Indies in fine fashion, scoring 122. Guptill played eight matches for New Zealand in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, with his best knock of 86no coming against Zimbabwe and starred for the Black Caps during the 2015 tournament, finishing the highest run scorer and posting a brilliant double century against the West Indies. Guptill has also collected more than 30 Test caps since making his debut in the longer form of the game in 2010 and has two centuries to his name. His World Cup form was enough to see him recalled to the Test squad for the first time since mid-2013, when he was named for the Black Caps tour of England.
His nickname is ‘two toes’ because he lost three toes in an accident when he was younger.
