AB de Villiers Announces Return to Cricket for World Championship of Legends 2025!

De Villiers will join other cricket legends such as Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, Dale Steyn, and Imran Tahir in the South African squad for this event.

AB de Villiers has officially announced his return to competitive cricket, set to lead the South African team in the upcoming World Championship of Legends (WCL) in July 2025.

This marks his first appearance since retiring from all forms of cricket in 2021. De Villiers, a former captain and one of the most celebrated batsmen in cricket history, had previously retired from international cricket in 2018 but continued participating in franchise leagues until his retirement from all formats three years later.

The 40-year-old cricketer revealed that his decision to return was influenced by his young sons’ growing interest in the sport.

He expressed that playing with them rekindled his passion for cricket, stating, “Four years ago, I retired from all cricket because I just didn’t feel the urge to play anymore. Well, time has passed, and my young sons have started playing the game.”

“We’ve been playing more and more often in the garden, and, well, it feels as though some kind of flame has been lit again. So I am heading back to the gym and the nets, and I’ll be ready for WCL in July,” he added.

The WCL is a unique T20 tournament featuring retired and non-contracted cricketers from various countries. In its inaugural edition in 2024, the Indian team, captained by Yuvraj Singh, emerged as champions.

De Villiers will join other cricket legends such as Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, Dale Steyn, and Imran Tahir in the South African squad for this event.

His return has generated significant excitement within the cricket community, with fans eager to see him back on the field after a long hiatus. Harshit Tomar, founder of the WCL, expressed enthusiasm for de Villiers’ comeback, emphasizing the league’s goal of bringing back beloved cricket legends.
