Argentina win second consecutive Copa America title

Argentina won a record 16th Copa America title by beating Colombia 1-0

Argentina won its second consecutive Copa America title by beating Colombia 1-0 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida on Sunday.

The final was delayed for over an hour due to thousands of ticketless fans trying to get into the stadium.

A late extra-time goal from substitute Lautaro Martinez, the tournament’s leading goalscorer, sent Argentina to lift their 16th Copa America title.

Just inside the penalty area, Martinez sent a right-foot shot through the upraised arms of sliding goalkeeper Camilo Vargas for his 29th international goal, his tournament-high fifth, in the 112th minute.

Messi, 37, suffered a knee injury in the 64th minute of the game when he tried to run but fell to the pitch, and immediately signalled for trainers.

Argentina’s best player’s right cleat and captain band were removed and Messi slowly limped to the Argentine bench before bursting into tears.

Following the historic win, Argintina’s biggest star Lionel Messi is likely to bid farewell to international football.

The win also marked Angel Di Maria’s final Argentina match.

While defender Nicolas Otamendi, 36, is also set to end his international career.
