Pakistan superstar Babar Azam has officially signed with the Sydney Sixers for the Big Bash League season 15, marking one of the most significant acquisitions in the competition’s history.

The 30-year-old, one of the most prolific batters of the modern era, will represent the Sixers for the full season, including all finals.

With over 14,000 international runs across formats and more than 11,000 in T20 cricket, Babar brings elite-level consistency and class to the Sixers’ line-up.

Babar Azam holds several ICC accolades, having been named ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2021 and 2022 and Men’s Cricketer of the Year in 2022. In T20Is, he ranks second in all-time run-scorers, just eight runs behind Rohit Sharma.

The signing comes as a pre-draft international pick ahead of the June 19 overseas player draft, where each Big Bash team can directly recruit one overseas player.

The Sixers seized this opportunity, reinforcing their aim to retain a top-tier squad by pairing Azam with Steve Smith, Moises Henriques, and Josh Hazlewood.

Babar’s reaction:
“I’m super pumped to be joining the Sydney Sixers,” he said in a video.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to play in one of the world’s best T20 leagues … I can’t wait to share the dressing room with world‑class players like Steve Smith and Josh Hazlewood … and build a strong connection with the fans in Australia and Pakistan”.

This signing elevates the Sixers’ international profile. With regular top-two finishes in recent seasons and two titles, the franchise continues to position itself as a T20 destination of choice. Babar’s presence is likely to draw attention from the Pakistani diaspora in Australia, boost ticket sales, and expand the league’s global appeal.
