China appears to be sidelining the Premier League in UK row

Chinese state TV appears to be sidelining English Premier League football matches amid deepening hostilities with the UK.

Reports emerged on Thursday that China Central Television, which broadcasts the Premier League across the country on CCTV-5, shifted Wednesday night’s match  between Liverpool and Chelsea to its secondary sports channel, CCTV-5 Plus.

It is not clear whether CCTV-5 will broadcast the remainder of the season, a source told Bloomberg.

A Chinese foreign ministry declined to confirm or deny the news, reports said.

The move comes after Prime Minister of UK, Boris Johnson halted the Chinese telecom giant Huawei from selling new 5G equipments to Britain starting at the end of this year for national security reasons.

UK PM has also spoken of his opposition to Hong Kong’s newly imposed security law, which punishes conflict against China.

The UK has also barred arms sales to Hong Kong and invited up to 3 million Hong Kong citizens to apply for residency in the UK.
