Football World Cup Qualifier: Cambodia rally late to beat Pakistan 2-0

Pakistan’s hope of winning their 1st ever World Cup qualifying match was dashed as Cambodia rallied to score 2 late goals to win the home leg. Pakistan held on for 80 minutes but two mistakes caused them dearly.

Team Pakistan which has gone through a lot of turmoil due the tussle of PFF leadership started the game with a 5-3-2 formation. A lot of local players including star striker Kaleemullah were missing and Coach José Antonio Nogueira opted to pick plying their trade in foreign leagues. The strategy seemed to be paying off as Pakistan looked solid in defence. Samir Nabi had the best chances however, he shot straight at the goalkeeper.

On the 80th minutes, Mohammad Riaz who was playing out of his natural position at left-back failed to clear a cross from the left-hand side and it resulted in a goal from Chanthea Sieng. Minutes later, he again stumbled in front of the attacker and presented an open goal. The Cambodian attacker Kouch Sokumpheak made no mistake.

All thanks to politics between the two factions vying for PFF Presidency, the return match will be played in a neutral venue at Doha.
