Former Pakistani Fast Bowler Farooq Hamid Passes Away at 80

He was Pakistan’s Test cap number 48 and represented the country in one Test match against Australia in December 1964 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Former Pakistani fast bowler Farooq Hamid has passed away at the age of 80 in Lahore.

He was known for his brief but impactful international career, playing one Test match for Pakistan in 1964 against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In this match, he took the wicket of Ian Chappell, who was also making his Test debut.

Hamid’s cricketing career spanned from 1961 to 1970, during which he participated in 43 first-class matches. He achieved notable success with best bowling figures of 7/16 against Wellington in 1964.

Despite his potential, Hamid retired from cricket at the age of 25, citing “dirty politics” within the Pakistani cricket system as a major factor.

Hamid was often praised for his speed, with claims that he bowled at speeds of up to 110-115 mph, though these figures are not officially recorded.

His career was marked by comparisons to legendary fast bowlers like Charlie Griffith and Fred Trueman.

Despite his early retirement, Hamid remains remembered for his talent and the potential he showed during his brief time in international cricket.
