Jasprit Bumrah’s Participation in Champions Trophy in Doubt Due to Injury

India's first match in the Champions Trophy is scheduled against Bangladesh on Feb 20, followed by a crucial encounter with Pakistan on Feb 23.

Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy is in serious doubt due to a back injury.

Reports indicate that India’s star pacer has been diagnosed with swelling on his back, which has led the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to direct him to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for rehabilitation.

As reported, Bumrah is suffering from back spasms, which he sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia. This injury forced him to exit the final Test prematurely,

Initial assessments suggest that there is no fracture, but he will require monitoring and rehabilitation at the NCA for approximately three weeks. Reports indicate that he may only be fully fit by the first week of March, which could be too late for him to participate in the group stage of the Champions Trophy.

The Indian selectors are faced with a challenging decision regarding Bumrah’s inclusion in the squad for the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19. They are considering whether to include him in the 15-member squad or list him as a reserve player. The deadline for finalizing the squad is approaching, and the BCCI has requested an extension to better assess Bumrah’s fitness.

Should Bumrah be unable to play, India may rely on other pacers like Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh, while Mohammed Shami is also making a return after a year-long absence due to injury.
