Jos Buttler Steps Down as England Captain Following Champions Trophy Exit

Harry Brook Tipped as Potential Successor

Jos Buttler has announced his resignation as England’s white-ball captain following the team’s disappointing exit from the Champions Trophy.

England failed to advance beyond the group stage after losses to Australia and Afghanistan, marking another setback in a series of poor performances in major ICC tournaments since Buttler took over the captaincy in 2022.

Buttler, who led England to a T20 World Cup victory in 2022, expressed that stepping down was the right decision for both himself and the team.

He will continue to play for England and hopes that a new captain can work closely with coach Brendon McCullum to improve the team’s performance.

“I’m going to stand down as England captain. It’s the right decision for me,” Buttler told reporters in a press conference ahead of Saturday’s match against South Africa.

“It’s the right decision for the team and hopefully somebody else who can come in and work closely alongside Baz (coach Brendon McCullum) to take the team back to where it needs to be.

“… this tournament was going to be important result-wise for my captaincy and obviously two losses and being out of the tournament, and with a bit of a hangover of some tournaments before, I just probably reached the end of the road for me and my captaincy, which is a shame. I’m sad about that.”

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has endorsed Harry Brook as a potential successor to Buttler. Brook has experience leading England in ODIs, having captained the side against Australia last year.

However, Hussain also cautioned that appointing Brook could be challenging due to his existing commitments in Test cricket and the potential burden of leading a struggling side
