Naomi Osaka’s bid to win a third Grand Slam title ended on Monday when she lost to Kazakh Yulia Putintseva in straight sets of the match at Wimbledon in the first round .
Putintseva took the first set on a tie break and then broke Osaka in the second set’s fifth and seventh games to win the match 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.
The 24-year-old Kazakh ranking only 39th in the world had no match for former world No.1 Osaka, who was also beaten by her at the Birmingham Classic last month.
World second-seeded, 21-year-old Japanese became the first top-two seed to lose in the first round at Wimbledon in the women´s singles since top-seeded Martina Hingis bowed out in 2001.
The loss came as a crushing blow to the US Open and Australian Open champion Osaka, who cut her post-match news conference short, saying she was about to cry.
This was the first time Putintseva had played on Wimbledon’s Centre Court.
“I did a good job,” Putintseva told the BBC. “I think my grass court play is getting better.”
