Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka says she had to be a “robot” and turn off her feelings to hold her nerve and win the final against Petra Kvitova.

The 2019 Australian Open women’s singles final was simply classic. It had it all, a rollercoaster of high drama, crazy winners at the death. Both the ladies put some insane skills on display, despite being under fire.

The Japanese, 21 beat her Czech opponent Petra Kvitova in finals, winning the championship by 7-6 (7-2) 5-7 6-4.

Naomi Osaka’s second set meltdown had made the tennis world fearing for a complete mental breakdown for the 21-year-old when she walked off court crying, hiding her head under a towel.

Instead, it became the simple the turning point in one of the most unforgettable finals tennis has seen.

Osaka’s win means she is now the World No. 1 player — the first Asian player (man or woman) to ever reach the rankings summit.
