Novak Djokovic turns Sumo wrestler during his Japan tour

Novak Djokovic is currently in Tokyo to compete in the Japan Open, took some time off to experience Sumo Wrestling, Japan’s traditional sport.

The world top-seeded tennis star not only saw the sumo wrestlers practice from a distance but also learned some techniques related to the sport and acted as a referee for a match-up between two sumo wrestlers.

The 32-year-old from Serbia, taking it to social media, has posted a couple of photos on his Instagram.

He wrote a detailed account, recalling how he used to follow the sport with his brother and father during the 90s in Serbia. Djokovic also revealed who they used to support while watching the sport on TV.

“I felt that I am out of shape (for sumo) a little bit,” he told the ATP tour website after trying his hand at the sport on Monday, hours before his first match.

“I think with a few more kilos, I´ll be ready to compete,” he joked. “Probably three times as much as I have right now would be the right measurement for me to compete.”

“It´s quite impressive to see also how flexible they are,” Djokovic said.

“I didn´t think that they were that flexible considering it´s a heavyweight sport, but I see that they are paying a lot of attention to the mobility of their joints and the flexibility, which is of course what allows them to move around as agile as possible at their weight.”
