Pakistan Claims Historic ODI Series Victory in Australia, First in 22 Years
Pakistan 143 for 2 (Ayub 42, Shafique 37, Morris 2-24) beat Australia 140 (Abbott 30, Afridi 3-32, Naseem 3-54, Rauf 2-24) by eight wickets.
Pakistan achieved a historic milestone by defeating Australia in the third One Day International (ODI) match, clinching the series 2-1 and marking their first ODI series victory in Australia in 22 years.
The final match was played at Perth Stadium on Sunday, November 10, 2024, where Pakistan’s bowlers showcased exceptional skill, bowling Australia out for just 140 runs in 31.5 overs.
This victory was particularly significant as it ended a long drought for Pakistan in ODI series victories on Australian soil since 2002.
The impressive performance of Pakistani bowlers led to the host team being bowled out for just 140 runs.
Pakistan successfully chased down the target of 141 runs in the 27th over, with captain Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam remaining unbeaten at scores of 30 and 28 runs, respectively.
Opener Abdullah Shafique contributed 37 runs, while Saim Ayub scored 42 before being dismissed by Lance Morris.
Match Highlights:
- Bowling Performance: Pakistan’s pace attack was led by Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, both taking three wickets each. Afridi finished with figures of 3 for 32, while Naseem contributed with 3 for 54. Haris Rauf also played a crucial role, claiming two wickets for 24 runs.
- Batting Display: Chasing a modest target of 141 runs, Pakistan reached 143 for 2 in just 26.5 overs. Saim Ayub scored 42 runs off 52 balls, and Abdullah Shafique added 37 runs off 53 balls, establishing a solid opening partnership of 84 runs. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam ensured a smooth finish to the innings.
- Tactical Decisions: Pakistan won the toss and opted to field first, which paid off as they capitalized on Australia’s weakened lineup, which rested several key players ahead of an upcoming Test series against India.
Harris Rauf, apart from bagging the Player of the Match award for today, was also awarded the Player of the Series award for dismissing 10 Australian batters in the series.
“Before the series, the bowlers had made a plan which they followed,” he said.
Meanwhile, Saim Ayub emerged as the top run-scorer with 125 runs to his name.
The left-handed batter scored 82 and 42 runs in the second and third ODIs, respectively
Captain Mohammad Rizwan — who was leading the side in his first series as the team’s skipper —expressed pride in his team’s performance, dedicated the victory to their supporters back home and emphasizing the collective effort of the players throughout the series.
Rizwan said: “This is a very special moment for me.”
“It is not easy to beat Australia in Australia,” remarked the captain.
Crediting the team’s fast bowlers for a remarkable performance, Rizwan also lauded openers Saim and Abdullah for giving the side a good start in both the second and third ODIs.
The series began with Pakistan losing a closely contested first ODI but rebounding strongly to win the second match by nine wickets. This turnaround highlighted the team’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure, ultimately leading to their historic series win.
