Quetta Gladiators Part Ways with Sarfaraz Ahmed Ahead of PSL 10 Draft
His release has opened opportunities for him to participate in the upcoming PSL draft
Quetta Gladiators have officially released Sarfaraz Ahmed ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, marking the end of his nine-year association with the franchise.
This decision means that for the first time, Sarfaraz will be eligible to participate in the PSL draft, which is scheduled to take place on January 11, 2025, in Gwadar.
The Gladiators have retained eight players for the upcoming season but have chosen not to include their former captain in their roster. Sarfaraz’s release has generated significant attention as he has been a prominent figure in the league and played a crucial role in the team’s history.
As the draft approaches, several high-profile players, including Tim Southee and Rassie van der Dussen, have also signed up, indicating a competitive season ahead.
Sarfaraz was picked by Quetta Gladiators in the PSL players’ draft on December 21, 2015, and appointed as the captain for the inaugural season in 2016. His leadership was pivotal as he guided the team to the finals, although they lost to Islamabad United.
In the second season, Sarfaraz again led Quetta to the finals, but they faced defeat against Peshawar Zalmi, marking their second consecutive loss in the finals.
The Gladiators struggled in the 2018 season and failed to qualify for the finals, losing in the eliminator against Peshawar Zalmi by just one run.
Sarfaraz’s persistence paid off in 2019 when he captained Quetta Gladiators to their first PSL title, defeating Peshawar Zalmi in the final.
Over his time with Quetta, Sarfaraz played a total of 86 matches, scoring 1,525 runs at an average of 29.33, with a highest score of 81 and seven half-centuries in PSL matches.
