Sri Lanka secured the Hong Kong Super Sixes 2024 title by defeating Pakistan by three wickets in a thrilling final held on Sunday at the Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground.
This victory marks Sri Lanka’s second title in this tournament’s history, their first win dating back to 2007.
Sri Lanka chased a modest 73-run target with a loss of just three wickets and six balls.
In the final match, Pakistan set a target of 72 runs, with Muhammad Akhlaq being the standout performer, scoring 48 runs off 20 balls. However, they struggled early on, finding themselves at 51 for 5 within just 3.4 overs due to a strong Sri Lankan bowling attack.
Sri Lanka’s innings was led by opening batsman Sandun Weerakkody, who played a pivotal role throughout the tournament, including scoring 34 runs off 13 balls in the final.
Despite a mini-collapse during their chase, Sri Lanka managed to win the title thanks to contributions from players like Lahiru Madushanka and Tharindu Rathnayake, who ultimately guided the team to victory.
Sri Lanka had previously defeated Australia in the semi-finals.
