The Periodic Reminder of the Amir that was

By the time, the other Aamir had Kamran Akmal caught at midwicket in the 3rd over, the match became a bit of a formality. Shoaib Malik did what Shoaib Malik does best, milk runs off-spinners but the result was sealed by the brilliance of Mohammad Amir in the 1st over.

Everyone has theories why Mohammad Amir doesn’t get much inswing these days. The most valid theory for many is that the white kookaburra is a hardball (almost impossible) to swing. Amir has chosen to retire from the other formats. But when it does swing even for a brief period, it ignites memories of vintage Amir.   In the post-match interview, the Karachi Kings’ man admitted that due to the conditions, it was their plan to attack early. Tom Banton went early, but Haider Ali who is making a name for himself in the HBLPSL for rapid starts; hit a four 1st ball. A defensive bowler or captain would have ensured that the next ball is not as full.

But this experienced team knew better. Another brut-of-a-delivery and Kings were all over Zalmis. According to Expected Wickets model of CricViz, it has a 9.4% chance of getting a wicket. The most ‘wicket-taking’ delivery Amir has bowled in the HBLPSL so far.  For someone looking to simply survive, it would have been lethal. Haider who wants to attack at all costs had no chance.

From the other end, Aamir Yamin also benefitted from early wickets. The allrounder seemed an inspired selection, picking perhaps the most dangerous batsman in the opposition and going for well under six runs per over. However, Amir had laid down the foundation and Yamin built upon it. It will be interesting to see how the all-rounder does when batsmen attack him.

Karachi Kings have seemingly turned a corner, fairly quickly. Having beaten Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi (twice) they look to have found the right combination. We are heading into the business end of the tournament.
