Usman Khawaja Backs Journalist Peter Lalor After Controversial Firing Over Israel-Palestine Posts

The controversy surrounding Lalor's dismissal has sparked broader discussions about media freedom and bias

Usman Khawaja, the Australian batsman, has publicly condemned the decision by SEN radio station to drop cricket journalist Peter Lalor from its coverage of the Sri Lanka Test series.

This action was taken following Lalor’s social media posts regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which included reposts of critical news stories about Israeli military actions in Gaza and accusations of genocide against the Israeli government.

Khawaja expressed his support for Lalor on Instagram, stating that standing up for the people of Gaza is not antisemitic and does not reflect on his Jewish community in Australia. He emphasized that the issue pertains to the actions of the Israeli government and is fundamentally about justice and human rights.

Khawaja also noted the unfortunate reality of ongoing hatred towards both Jewish and Muslim communities.

The controversy surrounding Lalor’s dismissal has sparked broader discussions about media freedom and bias, especially in light of rising antisemitic incidents in Australia since the onset of the Israel-Gaza conflict in late 2023. Lalor himself stated that he was informed by SEN management that complaints had been made regarding his social media activity, which they deemed unbalanced and insensitive.
