WhatsApp Relocates Operations Out of Pakistan Amid Ongoing Internet Challenges
The ongoing internet issues have raised concerns among industry professionals about potential economic repercussions.
In response to persistent slow internet speeds and frequent outages, WhatsApp has begun shifting its operations outside of Pakistan.
Recent documents from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reveal that the messaging giant has relocated its session server routing abroad. This decision was prompted by the government’s recent internet shutdowns, which have significantly disrupted service delivery and communication for users.
This strategic move by WhatsApp highlights the challenges faced by millions of users in Pakistan, who have reported delays in sending and receiving messages due to unreliable internet services. The impact of these disruptions has been profound, leading to communication difficulties that have frustrated both individual users and businesses alike.
Despite these setbacks, the PTA has reported some improvements in internet services across fixed-line and mobile networks. Over the past month, fixed-line internet speeds have risen by two levels, although Pakistan still ranks 139th globally in this category. Meanwhile, mobile networks have seen a three-level improvement, placing Pakistan at 97th in mobile network rankings.
The ongoing internet issues have raised concerns among industry professionals about potential economic repercussions. The Pakistan Software Houses Association has warned of annual losses of up to $150 million due to slow internet and VPN restrictions.
Furthermore, the country has faced significant economic losses from internet outages, totalling approximately $1.62 billion this year alone.
