White House Assesses National Security Risks of Chinese AI App DeepSeek

The National Security Council is reviewing the app's implications

US officials are currently assessing the national security implications of the Chinese AI app DeepSeek, as stated by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

This evaluation follows concerns that DeepSeek could pose a threat to the dominance of American AI companies like OpenAI and Google, particularly due to its low-cost model.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday emphasized that this situation serves as a “wake-up call” for the American AI industry, echoing sentiments expressed by former President Donald Trump.

She remarked that the emergence of DeepSeek should motivate US industries to focus on competitive strategies, highlighting that Chinese advancements in AI could catalyze innovation in the US.

The National Security Council is reviewing the app’s implications, and there are discussions about potential intellectual property theft associated with its development. David Sacks, the White House’s AI and crypto czar, mentioned that techniques like “distillation”—where one AI model learns from another—could be involved in this context.

He suggested that US companies might need to implement measures to mitigate such practices in order to protect their technologies.
