Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has started regular flights for Najaf, Iraq.
The national flag carrier’s first scheduled flight for Najaf departed on Oct 30, and returned to Karachi on Sunday morning,
PIA had been previously operating special flights to the Iraqi city.
According to PIA spokesperson, PIA flight PK-219 carrying 91 passengers landed in Najaf on late Saturday.
Upon landing the plane was given a water cannon salute by crash tenders with powerful cannons on the taxiway at the Najaf airport.
PIA CEO Arshad Malik was also among the passengers on the inaugural PIA flight for Najaf.
Marking the occasion a special cake-cutting ceremony was held at the Najaf Airport which was attended by the Najaf governor, Pakistan’s ambassador, and other officials.
